Hi, this is Daniel Garber at the Movies for culturalmining.com and CIUT 89.5 FM.
Five friends in their 20s and 30s — Cam and Toby, Dean, Helena and Val — live in downtown Toronto: They like talking about Noam Chomsky, listening to mixed tapes, and quaffing artisanal banana beer. But Val’s been feeling down lately so Cam and her friends decide a trip to the Toronto Islands might cheer her up. They spend a day exploring the spaces there and setting off firecrackers, but miss the last ferry back. And when the sun sets and the strange people come out, they realize that, far from a welcoming place, these islands hold dangers and secrets that threaten their very lives. Can they survive a night among the cultists, witches and murderers? Or will they never make it back across the water?

Look Across the Water is a new indie, micro-budgeted film that combines psychological horror, fantasy and psychedelia within everyday lives in this strange city. The film is written, directed and edited by Simon Borer, a Toronto-based software engineer by day, and filmmaker, singer-songwriter and poet by night. A CIUT veteran, he was in bands like Entire Cities in the 2000s, and now plays in the group De Pamela.
I spoke with Simon Borer in Toronto via ZOOM.
Look Across The Water is having its Toronto debut on October 23rd at St. Anne’s Parish Hall, along with live music and a Q&A.
