Hi, this is Daniel Garber at the Movies for culturalmining.com and CIUT 89.5 FM.
Beatrice is a young woman in an idyllic Métis village called Wapamon Sipi. She writes for the local newspaper and works at the convenience store at a local gas station. Nothing much changes there… until one day, two women drive into town. One is a young, from the big city in a shiny new car. The other, much older whose face — and automobile — are a bit the worn for wear. Bea’s reactions are also very different. She is infatuated by the first one — is this love at first sight? — but full of anger toward the second. Who are they, why did they come here, what are they looking for, and what are their ties to Bea?
Blood Lines is a Canadian drama about newfound same-sex love and cross-generational ties, old and new, among women within a modern Métis town. It’s funny and touching, showing a culture and language rarely depicted on film. It stars accomplished actress Dana Solomon as Bea, and newcomer Derica Lafrance as Chani. It’s written, directed and co-stars noted award-winning Métis actress, performer and creator Gail Maurice, whom I interviewed on this show in 2022 about her first film Rosie.
Blood Lines had its world premiere at TIFF 50.
I spoke with Gail, Dana and Derica in person during TIFF.
Blood Lines opens theatrically in Canada on June 26th, 2060.
